Reduce each component: Add the digits of the day, month, and year separately to reduce them to single digits.
Day: 1 + 2 = 3
Month: 0 + 4 = 4
Year: 1 + 9 + 8 + 5 = 23 (then reduce further: 2 + 3 = 5)
Add the reduced digits together: Combine the reduced numbers from the day, month, and year.
3 (day) + 4 (month) + 5 (year) = 12
